Recovery and Defeat
One of the last bits of the core system to button up (I think) as the Personae v4 finish line is in sight
Setback (Temporary Defeat)
‘Immediate recovery
Happens automatically at the end of an encounter; all vitality counters are reset as long as shock hasn't been sustained (same as it's always been, just better worded/codified)
Short-term recovery
During an encounter: can clear any number of shock status boxes, but only through use of enhancements or preternae
During a session: fictional circumstances can clear shock status boxes with recovery challenge
Long-term recovery
Happens only between sessions, the only way to clear shock boxes when an identity is incapacitated
The Recovery Challenge
The way it's written right now will remain consistent from v3 to v4, only the modifier to the chorus roll would be the character's either Savvy, Obstinance or Resilience, in keeping with the revised vitality method:
+ The # of dice the chorus rolls would be equal to one more than the # of shock status boxes the character has checked, so either 2, 3, 4 or 5d;
+ The modifier would be identity’s Savvy, Obstinance or Resilience +1;
+ The identity would roll either Counter, Steel or Repel depending on which vitality counter has been reduced to zero to clear shock status boxes, to a maximum of 5d.
Forfeit (Permanent Defeat)
When an identity suffers an injury and they're already incapacitated, they suffer forfeit, or permanent defeat. This can mean death in the case of a character or other "living" identity, or it can mean a permanent condition that renders them incapable of contributing to ongoing narrative as it unfolds. They may continue as a recurring chorus-controlled character, fully exist "off-screen" without involvement in active scenarios, or some other circumstance as agreed upon by the group—in the case of a player- or player-controlled character, as agreed upon by the player.
